Indian diamonds ruled the world treasury till diamond mines were discovered in Brazil and South Africa. Currently, the only functioning diamond mine in India is in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, which was once a part of Bundelkhand. Formerly, these dimond mines were owned by the descendants of the Maharaja of Bundelkhand, Chhatrashaal who ruled over Panna. The ownership were transferred to NMDC Ltd in 1950 in parts. Few years back, along with NMDC Ltd, Rio Tinto was also associated in mining. The mention of Panna diamond mines can be found in the travelogues of Bernier in 17th century.
In the photo, the dynastic necklace of Panna royal family can be seen in which diamonds were mined from Panna itself worn by the current Maharani of Panna.
